The book value or “Canadian Black Book price” is the average of what cars have been selling for at dealer auctions. It is only a guide. The value of your vehicle will depend on its condition, current market conditions, and whether or not you are trading at a dealership. (Dealers buy at wholesale and sell at retail. They won’t buy your car unless they can turn a profit.)
If your car is rare and in demand, it will likely be worth more than a common model. If you are trading at a dealership in the spring and they are low on inventory, they will often pay more for your car than they would at the end of the year when sales typically slow down.
The quickest way to get a general idea of what your car is worth would be to find similar vehicles online. One place to do this is AutoTrader, another is Kijiji. Comparing the exact model, options, and km’s are importnat when trying to establish your cars retail value.
You can obtain the wholesale value by visiting the Canadian Black Book official website.
Once you have the wholesale and retail value of your car, deciding how much to ask for it will be a lot easier.
